Do I Need Therapy?

You don’t need to be in crisis or wait until you feel completely overwhelmed to reach out for help. Some people do come to therapy when they’ve hit “rock bottom,” but you don’t have to wait for that. You might be facing a difficult period, or something from your past could be affecting how you feel. Sometimes we try to minimise our feelings by thinking, “Others have it worse,” or “On paper my life is fine, I shouldn’t feel this way.” While well-intentioned, comparing yourself to others doesn’t change how you actually feel. Therapy is about paying attention to your experiences, not comparing pain.

If you’ve been thinking about therapy for a while, that could be a sign it’s worth talking to a professional.

People come to therapy for many reasons:

  • Feeling like there’s no one to talk to about what’s troubling them
  • Wanting to maintain emotional wellbeing, almost like a check-in
  • Needing help to move forward after a difficult relationship or life change
  • Experiencing emptiness, low mood, or anxiety even while functioning well at work or in relationships

Many people carry difficult experiences alone, storing them in a “box” to deal with later. Sometimes that box fills up and becomes overwhelming. Therapy offers a space to explore these feelings safely, without judgment or blame.

I offer a free introductory call where we can discuss what’s on your mind and explore whether therapy could help.  Often, the fact that you’ve been wondering about therapy is itself a sign that reaching out could be the next step. I offer in person counselling sessions in St Albans and online.

It’s normal to feel unsure. You don’t have to have all the answers before starting. We can take it one step at a time, at your pace. Get in touch.
